How does AI choose which local business to recommend?
Key takeaway
There is no one public rule that every AI system uses. The exact question matters, and so does the public information connected to each business. A company that is clearly tied to the problem, the local area, real proof, and useful answers is easier for AI to connect to the customer.
The question comes first
A person asking “plumber near me” is not asking the same thing as a person saying, “My water heater is leaking all over the garage in Clearwater. Who can come today?” The second question tells us much more about the problem, the place, and what kind of help is needed.
That matters because AI is trying to answer the question in front of it. The closer your public information is to that real situation, the easier it is for your business to belong in the answer.
AI needs clues it can actually find
Suppose two companies can both solve the problem. One website says only, “Fast, trusted plumbing.” The other company has a clear service page, a helpful answer about leaking water heaters, local reviews, a short video from a similar job, and mentions on other local sites.
The second company has given AI more to work with. Not because AI has proved that company is better, but because the connection between the question and the company is easier to see.
Do not chase a magic score
Google, ChatGPT, and other tools do not all use the same system. There is no single button you can push to become the local winner everywhere.
A better plan is to make the truth easy to find: what you do, where you do it, the problems you solve, what real customers say, and the answers you can give from experience. Then test the same customer questions again and see what changes.
