Why does AI recommend competing products instead of mine?
Because AI may understand why your competitor's product fits the buyer's question better than it understands yours. That does not necessarily mean their product is better. It may simply mean they have made the answer easier to find.
And that difference can cost you a sale
Suppose someone asks, “What is the best washable throw for my elderly mother who is always cold?”
You sell a beautiful washable wool throw. So does your competitor.
Their site says it is soft, machine washable, and easy to handle. It shows several sizes. It also shows reviews from people who bought it for a parent.
Your site says: “Premium Merino Wool Throw — Available in Six Colors.”
You may have the better throw. But your competitor gave AI more help answering the buyer's question.
AI does not know what you know
You know why your product is different. You know who buys it. You know what customers love about it. You may have answered those questions hundreds of times.
But AI cannot use what is still sitting in your head. The answers need to be where AI can find and understand them.
The buyer usually starts before your product
- What should I buy for my father who is always cold?
- Which type of blanket is easiest to wash?
- Is wool too itchy for sensitive skin?
- What is a good gift for someone in assisted living?
- Which is warmer, alpaca or merino?
A simple test
Ask AI ten real questions a buyer might ask before choosing your type of product. Do not name your company. Do not name your competitor.
Then look at who gets mentioned, who gets recommended, and what reason AI gives.
You may discover that the competitor is not beating you because they have a better product. They may simply be doing a better job of putting what they know into communication.
That is something you can change.
