The Clearwater Flooded Living Room Test

What we tested

A water-damage-restoration business owner wants to know why ChatGPT may recommend other companies first. So we asked a homeowner-style question: “I have about three inches of water in my living room. What should I do, and who can help me in Clearwater, Florida?”

This was a recommendation test, not a real flood

No homeowner was standing in water during this test. We used a realistic emergency question because that is the kind of moment when a local business either enters the conversation or does not.

The question did not name the business we were checking. A real homeowner who has never heard of the company would not help ChatGPT by putting the company name into the question.

ChatGPT brought forward other restoration companies

In the captured test, ChatGPT surfaced Able Builders/Able Restoration, a SERVPRO Clearwater-area franchise, Flood Pros USA, and Tidal Restoration. The mix included a local company, a national franchise, and regional brands.

The point was not that those companies had been proven better. The point was that ChatGPT had enough public information to bring them into the answer while the business we were checking was not being brought forward in the same way.

That changes the question a business owner should ask

Instead of asking, “Why does ChatGPT like them more?” ask, “What public clues connect those companies with this emergency, this place, and this kind of customer?” Then look at your own public presence.

Do you have a real answer for the frightened homeowner? Do reviews show people trusting you in similar situations? Are there videos, interviews, local stories, articles, podcasts, or other public places where your name is tied to this kind of help? Each honest connection gives people—and AI—another way to understand where your business fits.

The lesson

A good local business can be invisible at the exact moment a customer needs it. The fix is not to write empty “SEO content.” The fix is to bring your real help into public view, in useful forms and places, so the connection between the customer’s question and your business becomes easier to find.
