How can I tell whether AI is merely mentioning my work or actually using or recommending it?
If AI only lists your title, it is mentioning you. If AI explains your idea or uses your framework, it is using your work. If it tells the reader why your book fits that exact problem, it is moving toward a recommendation.
Your book can show up and still be practically invisible
You know what it took to create the work.
Then someone asks AI about the exact problem your book addresses.
Your title appears. Good.
But look closer. Your book is one name in a list. Another author's idea gets explained. Their framework gets used. AI tells the reader why their book may help.
You were mentioned. They were used.
That is the difference
- Mentioned: your title appears
- Cited: AI points to your work or page
- Used: AI explains or applies one of your ideas
- Compared: AI puts your work beside another option
- Recommended: AI gives a reason this reader should consider your work
Do not stop at “Did I show up?”
Showing up is better than being absent, but it is not the whole win.
The real question is whether AI understood enough of your work to make it useful in the answer.
What to look for next
Ask the same important questions again over time.
Watch for the move from name → idea → reason → recommendation.
That tells you far more than counting mentions.
