National Experts Answer

If geography is not the main boundary, how do I define the market and authority territory I actually need to own?

Define the market by who can really buy from you and what problem they have. Then add the result they want and what makes them a good or bad fit. 'Nationwide' tells you reach. It does not tell you who your people are.

Question 5 of 10Topic: Who Your Wider Market Really IsPublished Sep. 24, 2026JB-reviewed Sep. 24, 2026

The whole country is not one market

You may be able to serve customers in every state.

That does not mean every person or company in every state is your public.

A better boundary sounds like this

“We help multi-location property owners with X.”

Or: “We help companies that already have Y problem and need Z result.”

Now the market has a shape.

Use the things that really change the sale

  • Buyer type
  • Industry
  • Problem
  • Desired result
  • Size or situation
  • Eligibility
  • Rules or technical needs
  • Other solutions they might choose

Geography can still matter

Licensing, laws, shipping, climate, or service limits may change the answer in some places.

The point is not to ignore geography. It is to stop using it as the only way to define a national public.
